Professor Gaffney's engagingly-written Neo-classical Economics as a Stratagem against Henry George provides compelling evidence that landed interests recast  the science of classical economics into a mathematically-based art form. This had become necessary because Henry George had exposed the complicity of escalating land prices and counterproductive taxes in creating recurrent periods of recession and economic depression. As a result, national Treasuries have been unable to forecast anything.  Too conspiratorial?
